So, I’m thinking of dropping my landline and using skype. I am nervous about it, not for any particular reason. I don’t want to “lose” my business phone number, so I’m thinking of just getting another cheap pay-as-you-go cell phone and having my business number transferred to that. I don’t really get that many business calls since most people use e-mail. So I could just let it go to voice mail and call them back on skype. My landline with taxes costs me $59/month. With skype, I can have unlimited calls in the US & Canada for a hair under $3/month. And to have my own phone number so that people can call me on skype, it’s $30/year. So, that makes it $5.50/month!
A cool thing is, I can use skype where ever I have my laptop and an internet connection. That would come in handy when I’m traveling.
The down side is, I have to be near my computer to talk on the phone. That is until I spring for a VOIP phone. There are cordless phones I could plug into my router and then use it like a regular phone, but through my internet.
I’ve obsessively searched on the internet for pros and cons. And I’m thinking of doing it. Has anyone done this? Lisa Sonora Beam in California dropped her landline for skype (and she has a cell phone for when she’s out and about). She loves it. A cool thing is, I can forward my skype calls to another number (like my cell) if I’m going to be away and am expecting a call.
Any advice one way or the other? Not paying $59/month for a landline would be really nice.
I got a headset for $35 last night, and tried it out talking to a friend in Santa Fe for about an hour. We got disconnected at one point, but I think I accidentally did that. The sound quality was great, and it was nice having my hands free.
