Last summer, I met (in person) Aimee Myers-Dolich, of Artsyville fame, when Ricë Freeman-Zachery, and her husband the ever-gorgeous-Earl (AKA EGE) were passing through. Aimee and I had”met” online before that, but for what ever reason had never met in person, even though we live in the same town. We’ve gotten together a few times since then, and had talked about meeting up in a coffee shop for an art journal date. Yesterday, we finally did!
I’ve been working a lot, and can’t remember when the last time was that I took a day off. (And by that, I’m not meaning during the week, I mean at all–like even weekends.) So I thought taking a few hours off for an art date was much needed. We had a great time, even though we didn’t really get much done. But that’s okay!
Luckily the coffee shop, the Mirth Cafe, had a big table for us to spread out on.

With the picture above, I used an app called Halftone, which makes the picture look like a comic book.
Here’s the journal spread that I was working on. I had started it during a journaling workshop that I taught this spring, and hadn’t worked on it since. And, I didn’t get much more done on it. The funny thing is, I had originally misspelled “understand” and didn’t like the way I fixed it. So on my art date, I tried to fix it by stamping “understand” on a piece of joss paper so that I could paste it over the misspelling. But I got to the end of the paper before I finished. So I got a different sheet to try again, and then stamped the “d” backwards. Hmm, is there a message there?
After the art date, it was such a nice day out, I decided to walk around a bit and take some photos with my iPod Touch. The first two were taken using ScratchCam, and the three black & white photos were taken with Hipstamatic.
Later that day, I had to run some errands. As I was driving down the street, I saw Dennis with a huge doll. Dennis is colorful Lawrence fixture who is almost always seen pushing a doll in a stroller, or carrying one in his bike basket. Each time I see him, he has a different doll. I would love to see his collection! I never have a camera with me when I see him, or don’t have a chance to take his picture. But this time, I pulled over. I had to. He had a huge, life-size doll. He asked me if I had some tape to fix the face. I wish I had.

This is so totally cool! That you met up at the cafe, that you worked on a journal spread that you’d started, that you TOOK A DAY OFF (go, you!), and that you took these way-cool photos. Got to go look for that scratchcam app.
Took the day off? I WISH! I took several hours off. As soon as I got home, I was back to work until about 10pm. But that was an early night for me!
WOW!What a wonderful post.
Loads of information here, thanks for taking the time & sharing with us all. :]
Sounds like a perfect day Traci! The aps you shared are very cool as, is always, your art and your view.
So nice to see pics of Lawrence. It’s been years since I’ve been there, and I miss it! The west is wonderful, but there was always a charm to that smalll town in Kansas, and I always loved to walk the campus and go to the Native American museum there. Thanks for sharing, Traci!
Love those camera effects! Your photos are so interesting. How fun that you and Aimee are in the same town; I’m a big fan of her web site as well! I can’t get over Dennis and his dolls–I assume Lawrence isn’t overrun with random dolls lying around for the taking; he must be bringing them along from his house for a ride. Very strange…every town needs someone like Dennis!
