30 Days of Get Your Art On – 09.26.11

uber mannequin in progress

I started this 16″ x 20″ piece in a workshop I was teaching some time ago, and it has been sitting, unfinished in my studio since then. I don’t have much time left to make more work for the Final Fridays gallery crawl this Friday. So, tonight I decided to work more on this piece.

For quite awhile now, I have been getting to bed way too late and not getting enough sleep. It’s easy for me to think I need to stay up late working because I have so much work to do. But the truth is, my health isn’t worth it. I have been waking up in a lot of pain from my neck problems for about a week now. I’m sure it’s a combination of things–like stress and also working too much.

Tonight, I had been working on editing a knitting pattern most of the evening, and didn’t get as far as I wanted to. But instead of staying up crazy late as usual, I said it was time to stop and I still needed to get my art on. I set the timer on my iPod for a half hour, and when it went off, I stopped working and even cleaned up my work table! Since my studio is clean from my open house, I want to try to be better about picking up after myself. Anyway, it’s amazing the amount of art work you can get done in a half hour! I want to do some more to this piece, so I’ll try to finish it tomorrow.

I follow the Zen Habits blog, and today there was an interesting post about starting your day off by doing something “slow” instead of rushing around or jumping right in to work.  It was a great post, and timely since I’m once again trying to figure out how to have (and stick to) a daily schedule. And, I’m also trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong–I feel like I work all of the time but still struggle to pay my bills. So, instead of fitting in my art as the very last thing I do at night, which ends up being after midnight frequently, I’m going to start my day off by making art. That will be my “slow” time. I’ll probably need to set a timer so I don’t work too long. But I think it’ll be a good way to start my day and a good start for a schedule.

Everyone has been really quiet. I hope you’re still getting your art on with me! You can see the rest of my posts for 30 Days of Get Your Art On  here.
