Intentional Printing Blog Hop & Giveaway!

Intentional Printing

Although I’ve never met Lynn Krawczyk in person, we’ve been in various online art groups together and I’ve always liked her work. So when I was asked by Interweave / F+W Media to review her new book, Intentional Printing: Simple Techniques for Inspired Fabric Art, and be part of a blog hop to promote the release, I was excited.

When Lynn’s book arrived, I immediately sat down and started reading it. It made me wish I had the time to jump in and try some of her printing techniques on fabric. Hopefully in a few weeks I’ll have a little more time to try some out.

What I found most appealing about the book is that she approaches printing much in the same way I do, with using  “found objects” and making simple stamps. Special or expensive tools and supplies aren’t needed to print beautiful pieces, which means people of all skill levels can use the techniques to print their own cloth.

Lynn starts the book off with talking about her creative process, and then moves into information about the materials, such as different types of paint, fabric and things that can be used to print with. In this section, she also discusses setting up a workspace, creating a paint diary and a design wall. Throughout the book, finished projects are shown that different artists created using fabric printed for them by Lynn.

The meat of the book (or in my case, the tofu) are the chapters on techniques, and projects. The techniques are all clearly explained along with step-by-step photos and tips, as are the projects. There are also chapters on stitching and layered printing, which explain how to take the fabric beyond the first layer, turning it into fabric art.

Generally I’m not someone who is drawn to projects in a book because I like to do my own thing. But these projects are fun, and show a variety of clever ways to use the printed fabric. So instead of having fun printing fabric, and then saying “now what do I do with it?” You’ll know and get some great ideas. I’m definitely going to try some of them!

And now for the giveaway! NOTE: For U.S. Residents only (sorry to all of my international readers!). Each artist in the blog hop is doing a giveaway, so you have lots of chances to win.
