30 Days of Get Your Art On – 09.06.11

hand 1

I wanted to continue with my series of little 6 x 8 canvases that I had already prepped from Day 26 of the first round of getting my art on. And, earlier in the day, I made a new thermofax screen when I tested out my Gocco that I am selling on eBay. So, I screened the hand onto the canvas, and put a little of the paint on the sides.

After getting inspired by Dana Trout’s blog post on painting with only 3 primary colors, and watching her video, I started adding some more paint. I tried some wet-on-wet like she showed in her video, and liked the soft effect. I added quite a few layers of some colored washes, and also some stamping. I kept going back and forth, not liking what I added, wiping it off a little, adding more, toning it down. It’s kind of a dance.

I got it to where I was happy with it, then added the blue lines from printing with the corrugated cardboard. It was a little much, so I distressed it a little, and toned it with some Golden Fluid Acrylics. I’m pretty happy with it now, but I’ll decide later if it needs anything more.

journal cover in progress

Whenever I work with paint, I always have something in progress that I can add the excess paint to so it’s not wasted. This time I added the excess paint to what will become a journal cover. I had already covered it with tissue paper the night before. I love how a thin layer of paint picks up the texture from the wrinkled tissue paper.

I really like how the texture is so pronounced, so I might just add a few more thin layers of  paint, letting the texture remain. You can see the rest of my posts for 30 Days of Get Your Art On  here.

I mentioned Diana Trout earlier. She’s a great artist who wrote the book Journal Spilling and has some upcoming workshops that she’s teaching at Art is You in Danbury. If you get a chance, take one of her classes! She has some great tutorials and info on her blog, including a free watercolor workshop that will give you an idea of what she’s about. I’m always inspired after reading her blog posts, so check her out!

  1. The texture looks awesome !

I do love the henna hand… there is something about these hands that speak to me deeply.
I bought some but do not seem to get to use them right (as stencile). I am still testing though (art journal is an happy place for it).

For day 6, I am finally going out of my journal again, and it feels very good after nearly two weeks: http://inner-voices.net/blog/2011-09-06/get-your-art-on-day-6-finally-back-on-painting-canvas/

  2. Hi! I am doing the 30 days too, but I’m not in the list yet…?
Also I wanted to say, the links and other things in the side bar are really hard to read now, did you change the colors? or is it my browser?

    • Hi Ayala, I’ve said in my posts that I’d add people’s names to the list when I had time, and so far I haven’t had time–sorry. All the names on the list are from the first round. As I mentioned in I think Day 5, I’ve got a crazy busy week going on. I wish I could figure out a way that people could do it themselves, because going through all of the comments to copy & paste people’s names & blog URLs, and then paste them with html onto the links page takes a lot of time.

Which browser are you using? I found out today that my blog isn’t displaying correctly in Internet Explorer–and sadly I’ve spent my entire day trying to figure out how to remedy that. If you aren’t using Internet Explorer, you might have looked at my blog when I was messing with things, trying to fix it. I’m ready to give up on it because I really need to be doing other work instead.

      • Oh I guess I missed that one, sorry about that :oP
I actually saw it in 2 different browsers and both was hard to see the font color against the background, but not sure if I got there when you were there.
There’s a form in blogger for people, really easy to use for links, but not sure if they wuld have it for other blogs as well.
        Well, good luck!

        • Right after I wrote the comment to you, I took my dog for a walk, and figured out a solution! (Dog walking is great for that.) I realized the easiest way was to have people leave a comment on the links page! Doh! That way they are listing themselves. So I just set that up. Click on the sidebar link for participating artists, and you’ll get a page with instructions.

I have fixed the problem with Internet Explorer. Everything should be fine now for all browsers, but let me know if it’s not for you. And if it’s not, which browser & version you are using. Thanks!
