30 Days of Get Your Art On – Day 8

Aimee Myers Dolich getting her art on

Today I had an art date with my friend Aimee Myers Dolich at Mirth cafe. We mainly talked, but that was okay. It was great to see her and catch up. So not only did I get out & was social, but I also got my art on.

I had decided not to take my journal, but to take my sketchbook and new Koi watercolor set instead. Here’s my drawing of what was on the table. I’m really liking my Koi watercolor set. Can you tell those are salt & pepper shakers, and jelly packets in the dispenser thingie?

I really had a good time, and want to start going out more on artist dates, taking my sketchbook & watercolor set with me. Here’s the table so you can kind of see what I drew.

Working At Mirth Cafe

Is everyone hanging in, getting their art on? I’m happy that some new people are joining in! And no, it’s not too late. (It’s never too late to get your art on.) If you’d like your name & a link to your blog added to the participant’s list ( the link is on the right sidebar, under the “Get Your Art On” badge), just put it in the comments. I’ll add it to the list when I get a chance. Also, I really appreciate the thoughtful comments I got on my last post. Although I might not reply to every comment, I do read and appreciate them all. I’ve already heard that some of you are seeing a change in yourself and/or your work. I’d love to hear what kind of changes you are seeing or feeling.

You can see the rest of my posts for this project here.

  1. Hi Traci-
I am participating in your “30 Days of Get Your Art On” challenge and I would love to be included in your list of blogs. I love your work and have one of your books, so I’m thrilled to participate in this great activity.

I put the link above to the “30 Days of Getting Your Art On” posts as you suggested.

My name is Jean and the blog is WildRumpusing.

Thank you for the beautiful work and for sharing with us.

  2. Hey Traci,

Artist date — what fun! So far, I’ve gotten my art on as a solitary exercise. But just today, I was thinking of Julia Cameron’s The Artist Way and thinking what fun it would be to do an art date with a friend. My art date today was taking myself to the art store and getting new sketching pencils. Your watercolor set looks fun — something else to add to the list! Love your work. The wood grain is fantastic (I’ve just started doing watercolor, so my control is not all there yet).

I noticed I’m still not on the list. I would like to be added:

  3. Hi Tracy, this challenge is an excellent way for me to keep my promise to myself of creating this summer. Please add me to your list of artists. Thanks so much I will be participating in the 30 days.

  4. i love taking my small travel journal and whatever supplies i can throw in my backpack, and heading to starbucks to play. my day 9 is up, and it was done this morning at the bux, sitting outside on the patio, enjoying the cool of the day before the scorching okc sun was too hot to take. their sleeves for the coffee cups make great impromptu stamps! its also a great way to meet new people when they come to your table with curious eyes.

  5. What fun! Love your sketching, and glad your paint set is so handy. Also glad to note that today when I clicked on this post to comment, it never refreshed manically once. Perhaps the spammer-ing has been completely obliterated, yay. xoxo

  6. I agree – an artist date sounds like shear fun! I need to schedule one soon… anyone live near Lancaster, PA?
For now here is my offering for Day 9 –

It’s funny I started later then normal (the weekends are going to be difficult LOL), I was a bit tired in the beginning but then I got my second wind and can’t wait to add the text to my art journal pages in the near future.

    • Helen, what browser are you using when you have trouble viewing the post? A couple others have mentioned it. It never happens to me, and I’ve tried firefox, safari, opera & chrome. So I’m not sure if it’s the browser, or maybe somehow my new captcha is causing it. Since it doesn’t happen to me, it makes it hard to troubleshoot. Let me know what you are doing, or how you access my blog when this happens. Thanks!

  7. I finished day 8 and posted it to my blog, then forgot to come here and leave a comment. So here it is, if anyone’s interested:

You’re already on to day 9, but I’m still working on it, so I post it tomorrow.

I love that you’re able to sketch in the field with a friend. I do a lot while I’m out and I like it, but I try to find more out of the way places where I won’t be interrupted by people’s curiosity. I think you’ve inspired me to find a drawing buddy!

    • It does seem a little intimidating at first to work out in public. I think I’ve gotten better at it because I’m used to teaching and having people watch me as I work. Even though it’s awkward, don’t let it stop you–it gets easier. I’ve even taken journaling supplies to eating places and worked on a journal page as I ate–as in painted & glued and everything. People definitely watched, especially when I stood on my chair to photograph what I was doing. But I figured it was free entertainment & gave them something to talk about. Not a single person asked what I was doing though!
